SONGS OBSERVES NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH
AT THE GRAND OLE OPRY
Michael Peterson joins Hal Ketchum and T.
Graham Brown
Tuesday Night To Focus Attention on
Songs of Hope, Awareness and Recovery For Everyone CD
NASHVILLE, Tenn., September 2, 2003 - The Grand Ole Opry, the world's longest-running live radio show, will dedicate a special segment of the Tuesday Night Opry broadcast on September 9, 2003 to performances from the new compilation album Songs of Hope, Awareness and Recovery for Everyone (SHARE). The Tuesday night show is broadcast on WSM-AM and Sirius Satellite radio from 7:00pm-9:00pm Central Time and can also be heard online at http://www.opry.com/
Grand Ole Opry member Hal Ketchum, recording artists T. Graham Brown, Michael Peterson and Billy Yates are among the artists who will present songs from the new album, Songs of Hope, Awareness and Recovery For Everyone (SHARE), coordinated and produced by a local group of drug and alcohol treatment professionals and music industry executives and released to coincide with the annual September observance of National Recovery Month. The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.
"Since increasing awareness is a fundamental goal of SHARE," said Bluebird Café owner Amy Kurland, past president of the Alcohol and Drug Council of Middle Tennessee and a member of SHARE's board of directors, "this appearance on such a traditional American institution as the Opry is a real landmark for this project. The Grand Ole Opry is a very high profile ally, which indicates that the bedrock fixtures of American entertainment are eager to embrace the important, humane message that SHARE represents."
Sixteen of the compilation album's songs range from familiar classics to less well known album cuts. SHARE's signature song "When Love Rules The World," a new recording co-written by Kent Blazy, Blair Daly, and Tom Douglas and produced by Paul Worley, showcases the voices of almost 20 artists. It expresses a vision for the album as a message of hope and a tool for change for anyone seeking a life independent of addiction.
The album includes Ketchum's "Unforgiven" and Brown's "Wine Into
Water." The voices of both artists are included on "When Love Rules the
World." All the artists represented on the album have been invited to
join Brown, Ketchum and the three songwriters for a finale performance
of the anthem on the Opry segment.
Alcohol and substance abuse is a serious universal problem. It causes the loss of millions of dollars per year in the workplace and eats away at the core of families. Substance abuse has been a central theme in country music since before the dawn of recording. The SHARE cd, which is available for purchase wherever music is sold, is a collection of music ranging from classic portraits of misery to new kinds of 'drinking songs' that promise hope, awareness and recovery.
Recovery Month is sponsored by the Federal government's
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's)
Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). The SHARE album celebrates
the success of hundreds of thousands of people who have found recovery
through treatment programs and 12-step groups. The album's central
message is that addiction is a treatable disease and recovery is
possible.
As a not-for-profit educational organization chartered by the State of
Tennessee, the SHARE Committee has received funding from Join Together,
a project of the Boston University School of Public Health that serves
as a national resource for communities taking action against substance
abuse . SHARE album proceeds after expenses will be made available
through grant applications to professional not-for-profit recovery
organizations nationwide. More information is available at http://www.sharesongs.com/.
